Chess Book Reviews -

Improve Your Chess in 7 Days
Gary Lane, Paperback £12.99 June 2007.

An up the minute and chatty book by the well known player and chess trainer Gary Lane. This is not a book that has been churned out using chessbase and reams of computer analysis.

It's more like a training session ... Lane writes in a very light easy and conversational way. But make no mistake, these are lessons from a chess heavyweight and you are getting expert advice

The books is aimed at anyone who wants to improve their chess and is split into 7 chapters. Each one a day's lesson.

All aspects are covered including very practical ones and games are used where necessary. However, these games are very much part of the flow of the lessons and the annotations continue the chatty style.

There are cartoons and trivia to further add to the fun. Also there are plenty of examples. eg . Top 5 rook endgames - five building blocks that show the basics of rook endgames. A lot of Rook endgame books may have too many examples and you get lost in the details. But Lane knows the right 5 to show you to get you started as he has the experience of teaching chess.

From there of course you can go to the more detailed endgame books if you wish. With all the examples from all aspects of chess coming out of his coaching experience you are getting the benefit of his preparation and experience in teaching many chess players.
